A life without a CV - a story from the Blockchain-future

5 January 2018 - Priska Burkard

It will be once .... This is how this story should begin, because this is a story of the future not of the past, a story based on ideas that arise from today's technologies like blockchain and how we can use it for better talent management.

It's the year 2025, Anna is on her way to work and is just passing Bank Future. Her mobile phone vibrates, a new push message "Your profile fits an open position at Bank Future". Anna's eyes light up, Bank Future has an excellent reputation, employees and customers are the focus, a holacracy organization (see Wikipedia for explanation) integrates them all, and rapid development of new ideas and innovations is made possible. Within the bank, there are great opportunities for employees to develop, which Anna would like to use for herself.

Quickly she looks at the details of the job, the description is exactly what she was looking for. A few weeks ago, she decided to take the next step in her career, she wanted to work more front-line, more customer-focused, not just behind-the-scenes. That's why she unlocked her profile in her "CV Folder" app and defined her requirements and wishes for the next job. With the help of Artificial Intelligence in the recruiting area not only exact matches of profiles are found, but also based on experience and abilities positions and mandates are offered, which the candidate with the acquired skills can fulfill.

This information is taken from the "CV Folder", an app that has become very popular among workers, employers and government organizations. There, Anna stores all her personal career information, manages the profile herself and receives all job-relevant data from employers and the state. Built on Blockchain technology, "CV Folder" allows that only you decide who has unlimited access to your data. And thanks to the mobile app, Anna has her data at hand anytime, anywhere.

Anna can now unlock the data for Bank Future and applies for the job advertised. The manual validation of the authenticity of the data is eliminated thanks to the latest technologies and the employer sees the data in a clear and preformatted way. Now only the personal conversation is missing, because this will never be replaced by a robot. And before Anna knows it, she also receives the invitation to an interview! Good luck Anna!

The future of personal information

Is this just my dream of a future, where I know my data safely and do not have to distribute it everywhere? Where I have control over the access and use of my data? Managing our own data would simplify processes, and guaranteeing the authenticity of the data provider eliminating the need for elaborate manual validations. For example, the following information could be provided in a job application:

  • The personal job profile

This describes a person from their own point of view, their motivation and what goals they pursue in life. The personality profile can be evaluated and safely stored by means of online assessments, which are carried out voluntarily.

  • The professional experience

After each project, assignment or employment, the employer issues a confirmation. In addition to the duration, the information also includes the job title, the description of the tasks as well as the required skills and expertise.

  • Diplomas and training

Universities and colleges create the diplomas and the information on the thesis digitally and can make it available to the students for further use, this is already done by MIT today (MIT Article). In-house training can also be digitally stored and managed.

  • Criminal extract and recoveries

The state as well as the community can transmit criminal records extracts and actions digitally safely to the appropriate person. This information can then be made available to new employers.

  • Credentials

There is also great potential in requesting and providing references from employers. The own activities and qualifications can be proven in independently secured form.

Due to the blockchain technology, all data are stored securely and cannot be mutated or changed by third parties. Although data on the Blockchain is publicly available to everyone, only the owner of the data will be able to decide who knows the identity behind the data. This does not mean that CVs, certificates or diplomas have to be sent or uploaded online, even online social media profiles will always be up-to-date and need not be updated on an ongoing basis.

This change will bring new business models and processes to life!
